🚀 Role Overview

Datadog is seeking a Staff Applied Scientist to join its cutting-edge Applied AI team. This high-impact role spans across the entire applied science organization, playing a pivotal part in designing, prototyping, and scaling intelligent features that power Datadog’s platform. You’ll shape AI-driven product capabilities, coach team members, and champion best practices in applied science.

As one of the most senior members of the team, you’ll own the full data science lifecycle—from ideation to production—and act as a technical force multiplier across projects.


đź§© Key Responsibilities

  • Drive end-to-end delivery of applied science projects: design, prototype, scale, and productionize ML models.
  • Identify and develop high-impact opportunities by bootstrapping data science initiatives and exploring new frameworks.
  • Engineer and deploy ML models and pipelines at scale for both batch and real-time use cases.
  • Collaborate across teams—product, engineering, data—to build the next generation of intelligent product features.
  • Mentor and develop scientists and engineers by enforcing coding standards, documentation, and technical leadership.
  • Represent Applied Science through internal talks, demos, and technical knowledge sharing.
  • Advocate Datadog in external scientific and technical communities.

âś… What You Bring

  • 8+ years’ experience in applied science, machine learning, or data science roles (preferably including technical leadership).
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or related discipline.
  • Proven track record in deploying production ML systems that solve real-world business problems.
  • Strong grasp of the ML lifecycle, including algorithm selection, experimentation, and deployment.
  • Expertise in ML domains such as anomaly detection, NLP, computer vision, personalization, and recommendation systems.
  • Advanced programming skills in Python or Scala, with sound software engineering discipline (testing, versioning, CI/CD).
  • Practical knowledge of data engineering (e.g., Spark, data pipelines, structured/unstructured data handling).
  • Ability to align technical work with business strategy and user experience needs.
  • Excellent communication skills across cross-functional teams and varying levels of technical fluency.
