💼 Role Overview

Atlassian is looking for a Principal Data Engineer to join our Corporate Data Engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for building our data lake, maintaining big data pipelines, and supporting the movement of billions of messages daily. You will collaborate with business stakeholders and engineering teams to drive growth and retention strategies. The ideal candidate will be an open-minded, structured thinker with a passion for building scalable services and improving user experiences.

🔑 Key Responsibilities

✅ Lead efforts to enhance and scale data pipelines.
✅ Work with stakeholders to ingest data into the data lake faster.
✅ Develop micro-services and architect self-serve capabilities for scalability.
✅ Minimize technical debt while improving data usability.
✅ Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement data-driven solutions.
✅ Drive the design and implementation of large-scale data engineering efforts.

🎯 Required Skills and Experience

🔹 12+ years of experience in a Data Engineer role, with 2+ years as a tech lead.
🔹 Proven track record of leading and delivering complex, large-scale projects.
🔹 Strong communication skills and experience managing cross-team relationships.
🔹 Expertise in building streaming pipelines with a micro-services architecture.
🔹 Experience with relational databases (e.g., SQL), Spark, and column stores (e.g., Redshift).
🔹 Proficiency in AWS data services (e.g., Redshift, Athena, EMR) and other Apache technologies (e.g., Spark, Flink, Hive, Kafka).
🔹 In-depth knowledge of Data Engineering tools/frameworks and standards for improving team productivity and quality.
🔹 Experience with high-performance data processing systems (batch and streaming) and a “Streaming First” mindset.

🌟 Nice-to-Have Skills

🔹 Experience with data architecture across CRM, Commerce, and Finance systems.
🔹 Familiarity with Databricks and its APIs.

💸 Compensation

At Atlassian, we strive to design equitable compensation programs. For this role, the base pay ranges by geographic zone in the U.S. as follows:

• Zone A: $203,300 – $271,100
• Zone B: $183,000 – $244,000
• Zone C: $168,700 – $225,000

This role is also eligible for benefits, bonuses, commissions, and equity.
