Position: Embedded Hardware Engineer
Department: Hardware Engineering
Location: Somerville, MA

About Formlabs:

Formlabs is on a mission to bring groundbreaking professional 3D printing technology to every designer, engineer, researcher, and artist worldwide. Our electrical engineering team designs circuits, sensors, electromechanical systems, and develops embedded firmware for real-time control of hardware. If you’re passionate about learning, tackling new challenges, and collaborating across teams, Formlabs could be the place for you.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop embedded systems and firmware, including research, specification, prototyping, validation, and production release.
  • Debug hardware, ensuring your code functions correctly on the system, and, if interested, take on hardware design responsibilities as well.
  • Own projects end-to-end, with a focus on shipping products, not specializing in just one area of software or electronics.
  • Solve problems across various technical domains throughout the product development lifecycle—from early-stage research to resolving field failures in mass production.
  • Grow into roles with more technical leadership, such as owning system architecture design.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in developing firmware for ARM Cortex or equivalent microcontrollers using C++ or C (bare-metal or RTOS).
  • Experience in software development for embedded or desktop Linux systems (e.g., device drivers, networking, or performance-sensitive applications).
  • Strong understanding of electronics fundamentals and hardware debugging.
  • Experience managing projects throughout the full hardware development lifecycle.

Bonus Skills:

  • Experience with feedback control systems.
  • PCB design and electronics prototyping experience.
  • Familiarity with analog or power electronics.

Perks & Benefits:

  • Robust equity program with RSUs for building future wealth.
  • Comprehensive healthcare coverage (Medical, Dental, Vision).
  • Access to low-cost 401K fund options and advisory services.
  • Generous paid Parental Leave (up to 16 weeks).
  • Tenure-based paid Sabbatical Leave (up to 6 weeks).
  • Flexible Out of Office plan—take time when you need it.
  • Ample on-site parking and pre-tax commuter benefits.
  • Healthy on-site lunches, snacks, and beverages.
  • Regular sponsored professional development opportunities.
  • Cultural events to engage with the diverse community.
  • Unlimited 3D prints!

We do not discriminate based on race, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, or other protected characteristics. If you feel you can contribute, even if you don’t meet every qualification, we encourage you to apply and help us foster an inclusive environment.
